Jon's Pocket Cruiser CAD Page

I've decided to build a small sailboat during the spring/summer/fall of 2004, since I now own a house with a barn, and the barn is big enough to build a boat in. (note - I didn't end up building the boat, obviously - hopefully I will build it someday)

The boat is called the "No Frills 15". It is a couple inches past 15 feet long, and I decided to build a CAD model of it so I can better understand how all the pieces fit together. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the CAD model looks cool, and fuels my desire to build the boat.

Following are some CAD images from my model. You can click on any of the images to get the larger versions...

Here's a new picture, with the top off. It shows an interesting point of view, that you can't really see in the other pictures. I've also removed the cockpit seats and floor so you can see the space there. A significant amount of foam flotation is stored in the cockpit, under the floor and seats.

The rear cockpit lockers go right to the floor, and the forward ones are about half as deep, with flotation foam under. Both compartments under the cockpit floor have flotation in them, although the forward one will have a little less given the pump-out hose.

This is a top cutaway plan view, for completeness.
Frames-small.jpg 5.7K Here's a simple cutaway view showing the frames, the berth top, and a few other details. You can see the offset daggerboard just poking down, and the top is on the port (left) side just beside the porta-potty. Of course, since I just found out that a portable porta-potty is illegal on a boat in Ontario, I'm not sure how I'm going to handle that.
Plan-Side-small.jpg 4.0K This is the plan side view. You can see the headroom and legroom for sitting at the desk. The model figures are about 6' tall, which is a couple inches shorter than I am, so I'll have to duck my head a bit.
Plan-Top-Outside-small.jpg 3.8K This is what the boat looks like from the top. Note that this is a parallel projection image, not a perspective image...
Cutaway-1-small.jpg 5.1K Here's another cutaway view, showing a partial cabin. You can see all the stowage compartments under the berth, and the two cockpit lockers. Under the forward pair of cockpit lockers is a large chunk of flotation foam. The boat has a total of 15 cubic feet of flotation foam in it, and that is enough to make it pretty much unsinkable.
Cutaway-2-small.jpg 5.3K Here's the same cutaway as the previous image, but with the berth cushions in place, and the two figures, one sleeping in one of the 6' 7" berths, the other working at the desk. I'm still amazed at the amount of room in the cabin.

Compared to most 15' pocket cruisers, this boat has a smaller cockpit and a larger cabin, which is just fine with me. I'm sure the kids will enjoy playing on the berths while sailing with the forward hatch open, so they can pop their heads out and look around.

RearQuarter-1-small.jpg 5.4K This is a nice view of the exterior. The bridge deck is at the same height as the seats, and the lower hatch board is 6" above that, so it should be possible to sail with the hatch boards removed in all but the worst conditions.
Sailing-4-small.jpg 2.6K Here's what the boat would look like from a helicopter. The fractional sloop rig is evident in this image. The mast is held up by the forestay, and two side stays that angle back from the mast and end up at the chain plates on the sides of the deck.
Sailing-5-small.jpg 4.6K A zoomed in image showing more boat details. The main hatch is designed to hinge up, but I will build it to slide forward instead, which I think will make it much nicer while sailing.
Sailing-6-small.jpg 5.2K Here's a similar view to the rear-quarter view above, but with water this time. All sail control lines end up available from the cockpit, which is perfect for single-handing.
Side-InWater-small.jpg 4.1K And finally, a side view showing the waterline. This is also a parallel projection view.
